About Thakadu River Camp:
Thakadu River Camp is a wholly-owned, community-based tented safari camp set within the canopy of the riverine forest on the banks of the Marico River, in the Eastern portion of the Big 5 Madikwe Game Reserve. The camp is ideally positioned in a transitional area of the reserve, enabling it to draw wildlife from two different, yet complementary, ecosystems, promising exciting wildlife encounters.
This treetop lodge has been thoughtfully constructed to blend in with the nature that surrounds it and allows guests to truly unwind and enjoy their peaceful surroundings. The timber and thatch main lodge consists of an open plan lounge, dining and reception area, with a sparkling pool and bar area offering stunning views of the gully and river to the north. The decor of the camp is soft and neutral with extensive use of natural products such as stone and fibres as well as metal and wood featuring prominently throughout the camp. The influence of the river is very apparent, and a traditional lapa is secluded within a glade of natural riverine forest offering the perfect space to enjoy the trees, birds, water and panoramic views
Guest accommodation is secluded within the riverine canopy that lines the Marico River, and comprises 12 Tented Suites – 4 of which are family units, each with an extra Queen-size sleeper couch catering for children.
The tents are spacious, elegant and beautifully appointed, with the decor reflecting a colonial safari Afro-Asian influence.Within the canvas frame, the air-conditioned interior incorporates a comfortable King-size bed (or twin singles), draped in mosquito netting, and a full en-suite bathroom, fitted with a Victorian bath and a rain shower. Large, glass sliding doors open onto a private viewing deck with incredible views over the Marico River.
Guests have the opportunity to enjoy early morning, as well as evening game drives, where the chances of spotting the Big Five are high. Both morning and evening game drives offer completely different opportunities and sightings, and are led by experienced and highly trained guides who have a vast knowledge of both the fauna and flora in the area. Guests can also enjoy the prolific birdlife found in the area, as well as discover the night skies by stargazing on beautiful clear evenings.
In between safari activities, guests can soak up the sun alongside the lodge pool, or indulge in a relaxing massage on their private deck. After an evening game drive, they can look forward to socialising with a drink at the lodge bar before tucking into a delicious dinner under the stars in the traditional boma.
The warm hospitality and excellent service offered by the community at Thakadu, along with the luxurious accommodation and incredible wildlife encounters experienced, promises for an unforgettable African safari.
