About Rockfig Lodge:
Rock Fig is a privately-owned, luxurious safari lodge situated in the Western sector of the Big 5 Madikwe Game Reserve.
Set on a ridge high above the plains of Madikwe Game Reserve, the lodge offers magnificent views of the pristine Madikwe bushveld, and stunning sunsets. The lodge is small and intimate, allowing privacy and individual attention for guests travelling on their own, as a couple or as a family group.
The main lodge area is spacious and airy with a number of indoor and outdoor lounge areas opening onto an extensive wooden viewing deck overlooking the surrounding bushveld. The sparkling pool is the perfect place to soak up the summer sun with a refreshing drink from the pool bar. Delicious meals are served either in the dining area or on the deck or under the stars in the traditional outdoor boma, where guests can enjoy dinner next to a blazing campfire, surrounded by the sounds of the nighttime wilderness.
Connected to the main lodge by meandering walkways is the guest accommodation which comprises one of four exclusive, self-contained villas- each positioned far enough apart to ensure seclusion and privacy, but remaining within easy walking distance of the main lodge. Two of the villas are suitable for couples, while the remaining two are suited to families or small friend groups travelling together. The villas are modern with an open-plan design and are beautifully appointed with African- inspired decor. Each villa has a comfortable lounge, a fully equipped modern kitchen and dining room leading onto a private deck with a private plunge pool and boma. Guests can enjoy panoramic views over the plains of Madikwe and the scattered Inselberg outcrops that are unique to the area.
Guests can look forward to two wonderful game drives in the park each day, led by a dedicated professional guide in an open safari vehicle. The first leaves early in the morning as the African sun rises over the bush, and the second in the late afternoon when it is cooler and the sun is setting. Enjoy incredible wildlife encounters and, half way through the drive, the guide will select a special site to stop for either morning snacks and a coffee or afternoon sundowners. Guests can stretch their legs and feel the thrill of being out in the bush!
Bumble drives are available for younger guests and are shorter than normal game drives. The guides focus on all the things kids find fascinating…like toothbrush plants, beetles, snakes (at a distance of course), Golden Orb Spiders in their webs …accompanied by exciting bush stories!. If the guide can find a good, clear animal footprint, he will stop and make a clay or plaster of paris impression for the children to take home.
Guided bush walks offer the opportunity to enjoy the smaller creatures found in the bush and to learn about spoor identification and animal tracking under the guidance of the lodge’s skilled guides. In addition to safari drives, guests can enjoy stargazing, bird watching (over 350 bird species have been recorded in Madikwe), specialist photographic safaris, or they can experience the thrill of seeing the likes of elephant, zebra, impala, and even the odd cat, at close quarters in the lodge’s underground hide. Built right next to the Rockfig watering hole, the hide is a photographer’s dream, and a favourite with children, as guests are eye level with the animals drinking at the waterhole. The hide features comfortable seating and a bar and snack service is on offer.
In between safari activities, guests can spend their day lounging around their private splash pool or enjoy an indulgent massage in the privacy of their own villa, and, in the evenings head over to The Cliff- the perfect spot to watch the sunset over the magnificent Madikwe plains whilst enjoying a Gin and Tonic and a tray of delicious snacks.
The warm hospitality and individual attention provided by the team at Rockfig Lodge, along with the freedom to tailor-make your own unique safari experience, ensures that guests to this magnificent lodge will make memories that will last a lifetime.
